Read Your Bible: Just Do It

“Begin reading your Bible this very day. The way to do a thing is to do it, and the way to read the Bible is actually to read it. It is not meaning, or wishing, or resolving, or intending, or thinking about it; that will not advance you one step. You must positively read. There is no royal road in this matter, any more than in the matter of prayer. If you cannot read yourself, you must persuade somebody else to read to you. But one way or another, through eyes or ears, the words of Scripture must actually pass before your mind.”

~ J.C. Ryle

  3. Great kickoff quote for the new year!
    Thanks Erik.

  4. I have been enjoying these Ryle quotes! Two of his books sit unread on my shelf. I think I’ll put them to the top of my to-read list. Thanks for posting!

  5. Erik,

I’m a big fan of J.C. Ryle as well. It’s funny … I just quoted him today …

… and then found your blog via your comment on my blog.

    Blessings to you!

  6. Hi Erik, thanks for the visit.

I’m really enjoying the J C Ryle quotes – this blog is one of my favorite daily reads!

  7. Hi, Erik: I just discovered your site via another blog. I’ve always enjoyed and appreciated Ryle’s blunt way of speaking. He always puts all his cards on the table.

I have now added you to the blogrolls of 3 of my blogs (a 4th blog doesn’t have a blogroll): “Reiterations” (www.reiterations.wordpress.com), “Triumphant Certainties” (www.alexandermaclaren.wordpress.com), and “Spurgeon’s Words” (www.spurgeonswords.wordpress.com).

Keep those quotes coming. Ryle is just as valuable now as he was a century and more ago!

    • Thanks for adding Ryle to these other blogs Richard.

Glad to hear Ryle is still speaking to you long after his death. You’re right, he does put all his cards on the table. He’s a breath of fresh air in this world we live in.

      Soli Deo Gloria!
